Chapter 6: How to Read a Specie

Walking through a great city can be overwhelming. The cacophony of languages and diverse aromas assault your senses. Buildings showcase various architectural styles, reflecting the cultures that call these cities home The people are a vibrant tapestry - individuals of different sizes, shapes, and hues dressed in eclectic styles. You might catch glimpses of rare beings like dragonborn warriors or tieflings lurking with mischief. Gnomes giggle as they play with clever toys, while half-elves and half-orcs blend into the crowd. In shadowy corners, a lone drow tries to survive, an outcast from the Underdark.

Elements of a specie

Character traits can be influenced by their family history and ancestral background. Each specie choice is accompanied by specific characteristics and details that define your character.

Rare and external species

Some species are very often uncommon in fantasy settings, these are marked as "rare species" This can be due to the fact that these species are organized in small socials within the campaign setting, or their inability to live in bigger communities. Always check with your GM if you can use rare species in your games. There are also rare species that do not come from the same universe. These species are even rarer among the rare species, and are marked as "external species".

Age

This setting determines the point at which members of your specie reach adulthood and can reasonably expect to live out their lives. When creating your adventurer, you can select any age you like, but if you're envisioning someone significantly youthful or elderly, be sure to discuss it with your GM first to ensure a fun and engaging experience.

Size

Most species fall into the Medium category, ranging from approximately 1.20m to 2.40m in height. A few specie are smaller, classified as Small, typically measuring between 60cm and 1.20m metres tall. Some rules apply differently to Small characters, notably those related to handling heavy weapons.

Speed

Your movement speed determines how far you can travel both on land and in combat. While most creatures have a basic walking pace, certain abilities or specie may grant you enhanced speeds, such as climbing or swimming capabilities.

Traits

In addition to basic characteristics like age, size, and speed, each specie has its own set of inherited traits that are specific to its members. These innate abilities come with your character from birth, such as the dwarves' exceptional night vision. Some specie also possess magical attributes.

Natural adaptation

Some species include the Natural Adaptation trait, which further defines specifics of your character's ancestry. In these instances, choose only one of the options presented.
